CHAPTER TWENTY-FIVE

When we made our way up to the room Mathilde had prepared for us, there was an obvious problem. Obvious to me, at least.

There was only one bed.

And it was small.

I mean, it wasn’t very small. But for a man like Kaius, it was small enough.

Kaius, however, didn’t seem to notice this problem as he threw his sword on the bed and took off his cape of furs, laying that, too, on the bed.

“I was thinking we should visit the blacksmith,” he said, back turned to me as he unclipped the belt of furs around his hips. “It would be a good idea to stock up on weapons. Especially for you.”

“For me?” I asked. It’s not that I was opposed to the idea of having a weapon on me—especially after what happened in Wienfield—but how the hell was I supposed to use one without accidentally stabbing myself?

Kaius chuckled. “Yes, small one. You should arm yourself. We can check the tailor’s shop as well and have you fitted in leather should you wish it.”

I looked down at my own clothes. I was still wearing the tunic and pants that had been left in Kaius’ room for me back at the castle. They were comfortable, and they hadn’t started to smell, which was a bonus.

“I’m all right,” I said.

“Then perhaps just some leather to go over top?” he suggested.

I didn’t think leather was a very good defense against magic—or steel, for that matter—but if it made him happier, then fine.

“In the meantime,” Kaius continued, “I’ll ask Mathilde to heat some water for us for bathing. Unless you’d rather wait until we get back after tomorrow?” he asked.

“Tonight is fine,” I said. I had a feeling I’d be too anxious tomorrow to do anything except look out the window for the stag. “When is the stag supposed to show up, anyway? How do we know what to look for?”

Kaius turned and sat on the bed, watching me where I stood by the door. “The stag was spotted once the moons were at their peak, right after the sun had completely vanished. The letter we received said that both times, it was spotted on the edge of the forest, on the western side of town.”

I nodded. “At least we have something to go off of.”

Kaius stared at me for a minute. “You’re worried,” he said.

I shifted on my feet and glanced nervously out of the small window on the other end of the room, wrapping my arms around myself. “Something’s not right about this place. There’s a saying in my world, about feeling like someone’s walking over your grave. That’s how I’m feeling now. Something’s wrong here.”

Kaius nodded gravely. “I’ve felt the same thing, small one. There’s a stillness here. I don’t like it, but there’s not much I can do about it, either. We just need to stay on our guards.”

So he kept saying.

But, if we were being honest here, I wasn’t so sure. I had the feeling that something was going to go wrong during our stay, I just couldn’t figure out what.
